Making …

It’s nice when orders come along for pieces that I haven’t made for a while. I always forget how enjoyable it is simply to just cut and stick… it’s very satisfying, gluing up greyboard and smoothing bookcloth around the edges. Here’s a little video at the end of this post showing some of the making process involved in my Crow book… there is a lot of drying time in between which I haven’t shown as it’s literally like watching paint dry ! What I like about this book is the fact that the crows aren’t confined to the book - they fly out of it and have a sense of movement. I have always thought that books were larger on the inside, a bit like the Tardis. They contain worlds. I have also always loved pop up books and I’ve kept so many from my childhood - this next one is Cinderella. A bit creased and yellowed but when I open it it still fills me with joy. That transformation from the flat page to three dimensions is just magical.

Sleeping Beauty

Another favourite is this carousel or star book; its three layers, each cut through to the inner. I think it’s obvious where my love of papercuts and book structures came from ! On my list of things to explore is this structure; full of possibilities. Here’s a little sample book I was exploring, with panels featuring otters and layers of water and foliage.
