I Know Where I’m Going

An ongoing inspiration is the film “I Know Where I’m Going”, made on Mull in 1945 (by Michael Powell & Emeric Pressburger). I have been obsessed with it ever since I first saw it probably when I was about twelve. I can’t begin to explain how much I love it. I began to make books about individual characters, exploring how the book structure itself might reflect the character, and incorporating all the words that character speaks in the film. I made an installation piece where I took all the words from the film and strung them on threads in a random order, as though they might recombine to make another story. The film does so much - plays with stories, with fate, whether our choices are right or even freely made. It is rooted in a sense of place, the landscape of Mull and even more so the weather playing important parts in the journeys undertaken by the characters. I was invited to undertake a residency on Mull by the Arts Centre, An Tobar, in Tobermory and had the fantastic opportunity to make more work considering and responding to the locations in the film, exploring the island and making large book works, which then culminated in a solo show at An Tobar called ‘I Know Where I’m Going?’. I also ran workshops and made a small edition for sale at the Gallery.
