Seal Book
A handmade concertina book, inspired by the film ‘I Know Where I’m Going’. The film was made on Mull in 1945 and I’ve made several pilgrimages to the Island to visit the locations in the film. I was also lucky enough to have an artist residency up there, and a solo show. This book was made to accompany the exhibition and is in a limited edition of 30. I went down to Carsaig Bay, where in the film, the heroine finds she can’t go any further because of the weather. There’s an eerie noise and she asks what it is; she’s told it is the seals singing. I too saw the seals at Carsaig Bay and cannot now remember if I really heard them singing or if it was just in the film… The book includes a snippet of dialogue from the film, and papercut seals with the swirling patterns of the sea.
It is 8.5cm square and extends to about 30 cm when open.
There’s a little film of the book here on my ‘Snippets from the Studio’ page. Each book is signed and numbered, in a limited edition of just 30.
